The Classen TR-20 (often called a Turf Rake or Power Rake) is a professional-grade walk-behind dethatcher designed to remove built-up thatch from grass, allowing air, water, and nutrients to reach the soil. It features a compact 20-inch working width.
Key Features & Specs
-
Engine: Typically powered by a reliable Honda GX160 or Kohler CH245 engine.
-
Blade System: Uses 28 heat-treated flail blades spaced 11/16-inch apart (adjustable up to 1-3/8 inches).
-
Height Adjustment: 5-position, single-action lever to easily set the dethatching depth.
-
Durability: Features greasable cast-iron bearings, sealed wheel bearings, and semi-pneumatic tires.
-
Portability: Designed with fold-down handles, making it compact enough to fit into the back of an SUV or truck.
-
Dry Weight: Approximately 215 lbs.
How to Use
Operating the TR-20 is straightforward, but it requires a bit of physical effort as the spinning tines will pull the machine forward.
-
Preparation: Clear the lawn of any debris, rocks, or toys, and mark any buried sprinkler heads or electrical lines.
-
Setup: Set your handle into the locked, upright position, and use the 5-position lever to lower the blades until they are just touching the soil. Setting them too deep will damage your lawn.
-
Execution: Engage the bail on the handle to start the blades and make your passes. You will likely pull up a massive amount of dead grass, which you will need to clean up and remove from the yard with a rake or leaf blower.
