How to use Ditch Witch C24X 36-Inch Trencher
The C24X is a walk-behind trenching machine used for digging narrow trenches for irrigation, electrical lines, drainage, and landscape installs. It uses a rotating chain to cut into soil while you guide it forward.
1. Jobsite Prep (Most Important Step)
Before starting:
-
Call 811 (utility locate) to mark underground lines
-
Clear rocks, roots, and debris from the trench path
-
Check soil moisture (slightly damp works best)
-
Plan your trench route and mark it clearly
2. Machine Inspection
-
Check fuel level and oil
-
Inspect digging chain tension and teeth
-
Make sure hydraulic lines are tight and not leaking
-
Confirm controls move freely
-
Walk around the machine for loose bolts or damage
3. Starting the Machine
-
Set controls to neutral
-
Start engine at low throttle
-
Let it warm up for a few minutes
-
Slowly increase throttle to operating speed
4. Positioning for Digging
-
Line up the machine with your trench line
-
Set digging depth control (start shallow if unsure)
-
Keep both hands on the control handles
5. Begin Trenching
-
Slowly lower the boom/chain into the ground
-
Move forward at a steady walking pace
-
Let the machine do the cutting—don’t force it
-
Adjust speed based on soil hardness
6. Maintaining a Straight Trench
-
Keep your body centered behind the machine
-
Use small steering corrections only
-
Avoid sudden turns or jerky movements
7. Adjusting Depth
-
You can increase depth gradually after the first pass
-
Hard soil may require multiple shallow passes
8. Finishing the Pass
-
Lift the chain out of the ground before stopping
-
Return throttle to idle
-
Shut off engine before inspecting or transporting
9. Cleanup
-
Remove dirt buildup from chain and boom
-
Inspect teeth for wear or damage
-
Check for hydraulic leaks
